Asia 21 Summit in Manila: Advancing Democratic Innovation and Civic Participation Amid Rising Polarization

Yi-Ting Lien, Director of Tech For Good Asia, joined the 2025 Asia 21 Next Generation Fellows Summit hosted by Asia Society — a non-profit organization founded in 1956 by John D. Rockefeller 3rd to promote mutual understanding between Asia and the United States.

The summit brought together emerging leaders from across Asia-Pacific working across policy, civil society, technology, and public leadership. Discussions focused on democratic resilience, regional cooperation, and the growing challenges of political polarization, information disorder, and declining public trust in digital spaces.

Among the featured speakers was Nobel Peace Prize-winning journalist Maria Ressa, Professor of Professional Practice at Columbia University, who spoke powerfully about the emerging “global architecture of deceit” — from surveillance capitalism and state-sponsored propaganda to generative AI and platform-driven polarization — that manipulates emotions, monetizes outrage, and erodes trust worldwide.

At the summit, Tech For Good Asia was recognized for its work advancing participatory approaches to technology governance, civic engagement, and democratic innovation across the region. The organization is deeply grateful to be part of a community of leaders, researchers, and practitioners committed to strengthening democratic participation and ensuring technology serves the public good.
